Afghan Slipper Socks

These comfortable house slippers are imported directly from Afghanistan. They are knitted by Afghan women, many of them war widows, in their own homes from a mix of 70% wool and 30% rayon. Soft leather soles are hand sewn to the bottom to give a long lasting warm indoor slipper sock. The work is all carried out in Fair Trade conditions, and all the money from the buying goes directly to the women.

A short history of Afghan Slipper Socks.

In the very late 1960's, an enterprising Afghan merchant took the traditional Buskasi sock from the northern town of Taskergoan and adapted the shape to have a heel. Using wool unravelled from blankets and sweaters donated by Aid organisations, he contracted local women to hand knit socks. Soon a soft leather sole was added and they started appearing on market stalls in the west.

Alastair Hull, with his brother-in-law, was one of the principal importers of slipper socks in the 1970's until the Russian invasion and war in the country halted the business. Now Alastair has regained contact with his old friends and once again is importing directly from Afghanistan.
